Stephane Michaelis launched stonefish, a little over a year ago. The company uses unique materials sourced from around the world to bring contemporary designs which transcend fashion to the home, workplace and exterior spaces.

stonefish's exclusive designs include beautiful sculptures and furniture made from Indonesian petrified wood, and tabletops and bowls made from Moroccan 'fossil marble'.

Stephane first discovered the Indonesian petrified wood in South East Asia. The pieces are approximately 150 million years old, and are sourced by local farmers.

Stephane says: "I saw the possibility of taking these unique objects out of the hands of the palaeontologists, and into the hands of the design conscious. Each object is a part of our pre-history, cleverly re-worked into beautiful contemporary pieces."

The imposing and beautiful petrified wood sculptures are functional and decorative and have a special niche in the marketplace. Locally they are believed to protect the home from evil spirits. The petrified wood comes in a wide range of colours, depending on the minerals present. Stephane individually selects and then designs each piece into timeless, impressive sculptures.

stonefish's fossil marble comes from the Moroccan Sahara and is around 500 million years old. A squid-like fossil, the Orthoceras, dominates this stunning marble and which is available in black or brown. Skilled local craftsmen work the marble into an exclusive range of counter/table tops and dishes/bowls.

Stephane is passionate about unusual objects and is always on the lookout for exclusive items that fit into the stonefish brand. He speaks fluent French and Spanish - a helpful negotiating business tool - and makes at least three trips per year to Indonesia and Morocco to source and research new products and maintain his close relationship with the craftsmen.
